What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

In recognition of International Women’s Day we asked Cathy Smith, Delivery Lead at Hound, what the day means to her.

Q: What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

A: International Women’s Day celebrates women, their successes and their journeys. It highlights the achievements women have made and the challenges that we as women continue to face. Women are warriors!

Q: What would you like to see change in regards to women’s participation in the workplace?

A: This is a difficult question in terms of ‘participation’ as it also emphasises that everyone is different. Some women like the spotlight while others are quiet achievers, and many undersell themselves and what they are capable of, and do not want to ‘participate’.

I think what I would most like to see change is the imbalance, which still exists today, sadly. That is for all women to feel confident in their ability, the value they add in the workplace and get the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

Q: This year’s IWD theme is Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. What are your thoughts around this?

A: My views and input are based on Western culture and I am cognisant that many women throughout the world are in a far, far worse position and some are in dire situations in terms of gender equality. The theme and the intent behind this year’s IWD is of absolute importance. Having said that, I don’t feel the theme Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress does it justice.
